Child Labour

The world may have advanced into the 21st century, yet it would not be wrong to say that even today most countries lag behind in certain socio-economic standards. One such factor is child labour.
Child labour is prevalent and widespread even in this age,not only in rural India, but also urban India.Working in hotels, shops and factories, children can be seen near open furnaces, wearing tattered clothes, and not in schools or playgrounds, which is their rightful place.
Most of these children hail from families that are so poor that even thinking about one square meal a day is a forbidden and unfulfilled dream to them.It is estimated that crores of children in India sleep hungry, not knowing whether they can even hope for a tomorrow, let alone one that promises a sweet and promising childhood. To escape this pathetic situation, parents send their children to work at small road-side hotels, fireworks and textiles factories, shops and if they can somehow manage it, then to cities as domestic help.
These children are forced to live in miserable conditions for wages so low that almost nothing can be availed out of it. Yet this money is sent to the village, for the child knows that the responsibility of feeding his sick mother and hungry brothers and sisters lies on his tender shoulders.
Quite often the children are not even paid. They are only given accommodation, and are fed once a day. This,in return,of putting more than 12-16 hours of work a day.Yet,the child cannot complain, for in this shattered situation he finds a security with the shelter and the food.
It is doubtless that the government has worked a lot in the child development field. However, their efforts are quite futile.Although there are many government initiatives under which a child can obtain free education, such institutions are yet not easily accessible to every child.often even though there are institutions that impart free education, parents are not willing to wait for a few years for that.It is right from their point of view too - they need to fulfil their basic needs like food and shelter immediately, for these cannot wait until later.
The government's ban on any child under fourteen years of age was rather unsuccessful. This will never work in a country like India where employment is limited, and there are a thousand poor fighting to get such a job, meagre as it may be.
Domestic help is a sector where a lot of children are sent. Many times, they are abused - mentally, physically and emotionally - by their masters. The fireworks industry is infamous for hiring children as young as five or six. Visit a hotel and you will find at least one little young boy washing the dishes or cleaning the table. Why must the hands of young children, who have probably never known the daily comforts we enjoy, be used to make fireworks,to clean someone else's rubbish?
However,a glimmer of hope is still there. The United Nations agency - UNICEF-and many other NGO's like CRY and 'Akanksha' are working for the welfare of these children. They are rescued from the evil hands of child labour and are taught basic things, that just might secure a better future. We,as educated people should also realise the gravity of the situation, and can protest against it by boycotting those goods that are made by children.
Next Diwali if you burst crackers and you see a million beautiful colours light up the sky, try to remember that some child was stuck in a dark room making those, and he would probably never see those lights that you enjoy. This is the pathetic situation of child labour and we must work to end it.

New York : Music Review

New York, starring Irrfan Khan,John Abraham,Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh, directed by kabir Khan(the guy who also directed Kabul Express)and released last week s under the scanner for its music!lets have a review!
Music : Pritam
Lyrics : Sandeep Srivastava and Junaid Wasi
Singers : K.K.,Sunidhi Chauhan,Mohit Chauhan,Pankaj Awasthi.
ok,here goes :-
--Hai Junoon - 5:33 - starting with a nice "na nan nan na...."its pop-ish,and sort of cute.more or less one of those tunes which you hear on the radio, and the tune gets stuck in your mind, especially the main phrase(hain junoon...na nan nan na).the song mostly talks about seizing what you have today, because your future will call for you, dedicated to friends.a few lines that i quite liked were "kabhi jo milenge raaste,
pal mein hi chamkegi hansi purani toh,
kaho kya kahoge hume phir
kaise chupaoge nami yeh palko ki?"
--Mere Sang - 6:30 - again, another pop song.ok-ok.the sort of song you'd listen to if its playing, but really wouldn't particularly always have this song specifically played for you.however the guitar part in between is really quite good.
--Tune Jo Na Kaha - 5:12 - Great lyrics, perfect vocals.slow, melodious, and the lyricist has captured a different view of love - of being under the impression of being loved, but its all an illusion.I'd say one of the best from the album.
--Hai Junoon remix - 6:11 - its got a fast beat, and seems to be primarily remixed to be played in pubs/discos - which i suppose is the primary aim of remixing anyway - but i think they could have done a much better job!plus, the "na nana na" and "hai junoon" gets on the nerves, and you cant really dance on it beyond the first half, because it gets so monotonous!
--Mere Sang remix - 5:57 - frankly, the difference between the original seems to be the increase in tempo...again,a let-down.original's better!again, not a dancer-types either.
--Sam's Theme - 4:07 - i like it!one of the two instrumentals of the album, its nice.i like the start, with the humming and the ending bits - sweet melodious, good company when you want solitude.
--New York theme - 3:09 - the start is good...its influenced by a lot of electric guitar and drum beats, but gets repitive...
so all in all,my verdict - ok ok.
no big miss if you lose out on not hearing the songs, cause they are going to remain the flavours of this season only!
rating : ***
cheers!

Facebook status!

hey!

so its my first blog back.i've been staring at the blank wall in front of me for ages, wondering what i should write about, feeling a sort of compulsion that i should write some brilliant earth-shattering piece which will have people going "ooooh" and "aaah".unfortunately,i just kept staring blindly.meanwhile,i thought, hey, lets check for any facebook alerts.

voila!the brain sparks to life as it sees the numerous change in status' of my friends profiles on facebook!so here's a discussion on how crazy it can get!
what do people USUALLY write on their status?well, whats on their mind at the moment.or,how their day went.or something about the movie they saw that day.or how how much they love their boyfriend/girlfriend.or a few favourite lines from a song or a book.
then again, they sometimes write absolute crazy random stuff!
what partially surprised me was that there are actual sites where you can get "hilarious, witty, smart one-liners: that will apparently "have your friends and family rolling with laughter while they wonder where you get your amazing wit from".haha.
like's here's a list of sites i got when i googled it :
http://www.google.co.in/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1Thttp://www4HPAB_enIN264IN285&q=facebook+status
its pretty mind-boggling when it comes to sarcasm, wit and humour.but the fact remains, how much of you remains in it after you have just copy pasted a line?what does it speak about you?what does it say of originality?
somehting to ponder on,till then,happy FB status-ing!
cheers!

this is going to be passionate.its going to be personal, honest and from-the-heart and on-your-face.love it or hate it,but do read it!opinions are welcome!
love!

In The End

Ready or not,
Someday it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises,no minutes, hours or days
It won't matter where you came from
Or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin colour will be irrelevant.
What will matter is not your success, but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion and courage,
What will matter is not your competence, but your character
What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you are gone.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance,
but of choice.
This was an article i read in the Times Of India edition dated December 29,2007.Simple,and yet so beautifully it has a lot of meaning about what we are and the lives we lead.

Title? : Hell ya

so what does the frigging title of this blog mean?i mean the general "intelligentsia",i suppose dont know what the hell it means!so anyway, its just a term i made,of the two words "minx" and "egress"[ya they are two separate words!].what exactly was the point of making this term,i dunno.I mean it sounds like im some ...i dunno...a conservative feminist or something like that.hell,im NOT!
in any case,to those who are still wondering what the HELL these words mean :
"minx" (noun) - 1.A girl or young woman who is considered pert, flirtatious, or impudent.
2.Obsolete A promiscuous woman. :D
"egress" (noun) - [No,it does NOT have anything to do with a female ogre :P ]
1.the act or an instance of going, esp. from an enclosed place.
2.a means or place of going out; an exit.
3.the right or permission to go out.
so that basically is that.actually,i had a blog before this one, which was covenantwoman.blogspot.com, whose name i had got from a bob dylan song of the same name.but then i got bugged of it,'cause i never did end up writing anything on it! :D now thats called irony!so,anyway,i got rid of that and deleted it.
then i made a new one.this is that.initially i named it blabberboard.blogspot.com .today, out of sheer boredom,i decided to check if id get my blog if i googled it.well, the results were'nt particularly gratifying.i came up with a hell lot of results, and none of them had anything to do with my blog :( so that huge big bubble of credit that i had given to my "sheer genius" for coining that term [blabberboard] just kind of burst.
so i searched for a few things.oxymoron.blogspot.com didnt work out 'cause some weirdo is using it.[weirdo 'cause he/she doesnt have a clue as to why he/she made the blog, and is a helluva confused person, and whose only single post is "what the hell is this"(good question,by the way),so which basically makes the whole blog USELESS and totally unfair to me :-( ]
i just kind of browsed a few dictionaries, and just put together two absolutely not connected words, and ta-da.born was the name of this site.
cheers.
and hopes that this blog does not share the same fate as covenant woman :D

Rock On!!

Rock On!!,the latest product from Bollywood, making waves in the urban theatres(shit, that sounded supremely like a critic review!),produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar(director of the awesome movie Dil Chahta Hai) and directed by Abhishek Kapoor, is a story about four guys set out to make it big with their band Magik. It has a simple cast, which surprise you with their acting prowess -
Farhan Akhtar - Aditya Shroff , a financial dude in the later half of his life, and the band's lead singer.
Prachi Desai - Aditya's wife, who plays a pivotal role in getting the band together
Arjun Rampal - Joe Mascarenhas, the lead guitarist, and the out of work husband.
Shabana Goswami - Joe's pretty wife, who has aspirations of becoming a famous stylist, and later becomes Joe's frustrated fish-selling wife.
Luke Kenny - Rob,the keyboard-wala,and who handles the technical stuff of the band.
Purab Kohli - KD,the band's crazy drummer and the guy with the bestest humour in the movie, and the cute beaded beard.
The movie is simple and clean. And its USP is that it connects with the youngsters because of its realistic approach, and the importance of realising your dreams. The music is good clean rock, and refreshing because it is one of the few hindi movies which has only rock music with hindi lyrics.A lot of drums, guitar and good beats, that make you hum the song even if you really did not catch the lyrics in the first go.Although must say,its a good attempt by the lyricist Javed Akhtar,as it gives the feel to the movie.About the compositions, well done to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Farhan Akhtar, who must say was over-used in the movie(c'mon man! hes the actor-producer-AND-singer!) lives upto the expectations in all three roles.
Now,about the story - in their 20's,these four believe that they can conquer the world with the music, and with their "Magik".They save up and prepare themselves to take part in a contest, that clinches them a deal to make an album, and a video of their own. This is where things turn sour. They are forced to make compromises, and Joe(Arjun) feels that Aditya is being favoured by the music company, and that the others are being side-lined completely. This leads to a tussle,Aditya goes back where he came from, and the band breaks up.
Ten years down the line,Aditya is married, and leads a SAD life as a financial expert, and there's no music in his life.Joe has a music shop, performs occasionally on stage, but is unhappy with life, with his wife constantly nagging him about his unemployment.Rob works with Anu malik(?!) and is the only one amongst the four who's still connected with his passion.KD works at his dad's jewellry shop.
A chance meeting with Sakshi(Prachi desai),prompts KD to get in touch with the other 3,and try patching up their differences.Eventually, the story unfolds that noone is really happy, and has sacrificed adn compromised everywhere. The story then goes on to show their re-union,the almost-going away of Joe,the love of KD (with Koel Purie),and the saddest part -the death of Rob due to brain tumour. They perform for the last time together on stage, which is one of the most brilliant scenes of the movie, with the screaming crowds, and Joe's wife crying in the wings.touching.
Its a very good movie, and deserves the accolades.Watch it,I say.You might not regret it.If the movie has its anomalies, you ignore them because the cast and crew has touched the essence of the movie.
I'd give it * * * * stars.
And I'm going to watch it in the theatres again.
:-)
